I spent Christmas last year in Buenos Aires with my family, who travelled to visit me. As it was summer in a foreign country our typical holiday traditions were not practiced. Being back for the Christmas season this year has been a wonderful reminder of the joy of holiday celebrations and traditions to share with friends and family. I have been blown away by the festive mood and Christmas spirit and am loving listening to Christmas music, seeing houses decorated with lights and being greeted by salvation army bell ringers holding the door to Nordstroms which is filled with holiday shoppers in scarves and woolen mittens.
We had a ladies’ holiday celebration and went for lunch at the stunningly beautiful Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle. The incredible Northwest fare was so appealing, and the dining experience elevated to the pinnacle of perfection by the gorgeous monumental crystal chandeliers of the dining room. Personally I think a crystal chandelier is the only thing missing in my day-to-day life. Here is what we ate (prepare to drool at keenly executed artistic culinary prowess):
Delicate arugula leaves lightly dressed and served over warm polenta croutons with miniature kalamata olives.
A chilled carrot and ginger soup served with an avocado salad.
Take two for full appreciation of proper caviar serving-ware, re-appropriated.
Crab cake, and more importantly, crab claw meat, served with glazed carrots and micro-greens.
After our fantastic lunch we went to see The Nutcracker, another Christmas tradition of my childhood. The set was absolutely spectacular, and had been designed by Maurice Sendak, of Where The Wild Things Are fame. The ballet was wonderful.
