Depending on my route, I walk by 5 to 10 pieces of graffiti art on my way to the gym. No, I’m not huffing it miles and miles just to sit on a spin bike. It’s just that Buenos Aires is a true and glorious graffiti art gallery. We’re not talking about bubble letters and hurriedly scrawled tags, but proper art spray painted on the bricks and mortar that make up this concrete jungle.
It’s big. It’s beautiful. It’s a key source of inspiration for me as an artist (along with the great art heroes of my formative years M.C. Escher and Dr. Seuss). So, I decided I wanted to go BIG. How big? 81 square feet, which is 27 x 3 feet, which is also 9 x 1 yards of canvas. Oh – and all of it covered in ink and paint in just 5 days.
Seedlings of the idea were planted the first time I walked into the former headquarters of what is now the San Telmo Art Walk. Since then they grew and grew. Now, I’ve got myself an event – “A Seuss Escher Lovechilde Goes the Whole 9 Yards”.
Well, almost. Okay, not really. I’ve got myself 25% of the way there. I created a Kickstarter project to fund this endeavor.
For those of you who don’t know, Kickstarter is a crowd-funding, or micro-patronage, website where people learn about arts projects and then back them with donations large and small – and in return get artifacts from the projects such as cd’s, posters, prints, and art work. Kickstarter works on an all or nothing funding model. If the project isn’t 100%, backer donations never get collected.
So, my 25% funding is as good as goose eggs right now. However, however, there is still time on the clock – 16 Days. In that time, the marketing machines are working in over drive. The creative juices are getting squeezed. The emails and blog posts are taking flight. Please take a gander at my video, share it if you like it, or hey, get yourself a piece of the action!
Or, spreading the word about a project will tickle the Kickstarter staff to the point they may just feature it or, at least, put it on their popular section. With 2000 projects a day getting submitted, it takes a lot to get on their radar. You can find more information here, there, and everywhere:
